“Everyone has really gone out of the way to find what works best for [my son.] Finding different ways to do therapy without him having to do it in a way that doesn’t work for him and makes it difficult. We have had more progress here in 3 months time than in a year and a half somewhere else.”
Samantha M, Bluffton, SC

My presently 2& half years old started PT at lowcoutry therapy at 9 months ..born 8 weeks 3 days early...he never crawled or did any tummy time. But with miss Kristen's help he was off runing by 16 months...as of now he sees miss Erin his OT therapist & miss Sonia his speech therapist.. and miss Kristen his PT therapist. GREAT ladies and therapists hands down. ..my husband and I are so grateful for their kindness patience and help.

I know my son's speech would not be what it is today without all the sessions with his therapists - Sarah, Sonya, and Katie. And his dexterity and hand strength is so much better with the help of Kate and Whitney... I chose to drive 20mi each way instead of a closer office because the girls are so great! Even Jan and Ayana are awesome. Thank you, Jessie, for founding such a wonderful environment for my son to learn!

"This fieldwork placement was very educational. I was able to observe other disciplines, and see how each therapist helps/works with other disciplines cohesively."
General comments on supervision:
"100% supervision in beginning of field site, independent by end of field site. Great pace of supervision, help was always available if needed."
“An understanding heart is everything in a teacher, and cannot be esteemed highly enough. One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feeling. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.”

After completing six consecutive years of study in the field of speech-language pathology, it is a common joke that you have no idea what you’re doing when you head into your first internship. This is exactly how I was feeling when I started my internship at Lowcountry Therapy Center. Many people had reassured me that you learn more in your internships than you ever had in any class, and looking back, these people were so correct.
Throughout four years of undergraduate studies and two years of graduate classes, I had never been introduced to pediatric occupational therapy. Many ideas crossed my mind; fine motor skills, writing, and tying shoes were all potential goals to work on in therapy. Until shadowing some of the amazing occupational therapists at LTC opened my eyes. I learned the importance of sensory input for each child. This input can be the key to speech output, increased concentration during tasks, or even a simple reinforcement for working throughout the session. Although my time at LTC was short, I will take this knowledge of occupational therapy with me into any job I may have in the future.
Months before starting this internship at LTC, I attended a guest lecture about pediatric feeding. This information greatly interested me. Luckily, I was able to participate in multiple evaluations throughout my stay, as well as having some patients with feeding difficulties on our caseload. These encounters were immensely beneficial for learning about pediatric feeding therapy. Seeing feeding therapy spanning from infants to school-aged children helped create a base of knowledge to hopefully expand on as I grow and learn throughout my career.
The most important thing that I took away from my time at LTC was to be passionate about what I do. When you walk in the door at LTC, it is obvious that you are surrounded by passionate people who love what they do. This passion ensures all patients are getting the best, evidence-based treatment possible. This passion promotes collaborations between disciplines. Most importantly, this passion makes all of these people the best therapy providers they can be. After being immersed in this environment, you wouldn’t want it any other way. As a new professional, I will always have LTC in my mind and strive to keep my passion for this amazing field alive.
